Quilts

by Helen Graebner

I spread the quilt
upon the bed
and smooth it carefully.
Small pieces cut in fine designs
with colors bright and clear
remind me of events gone by
and bring again to my mind's eye
the joys of yester-year.

My wedding day
a baby's laugh
a picnic by the sea --
all these scraps of colored cloth
bring back to me.

And as I stand remembering there
I come to understand:
as quilters sew together
by careful steady hand
their scraps of cloth
of sunny yellow and snowy white
we also piece together
the love and the delight
of all the days of our own histories
into a bright
and cherished
quilt of memories.
